5 Things you need to know about Fishing Walleye
1. The best fishing is on big water.
2. They are caught best during the summer at 20-40 ft depths.
3. You can catch these guys any time of year.
4. For freshwater fishing, Walleye anglers are using copper wires. In the summer or during seasonal transitions, when walleyes are staged in deep water, copper-wire trolling systems are proving to help maintain depth control throughout the target zone.
5. Because walleyes have excellent visual acuity under low illumination levels, they tend to feed more frequently at dawn and dusk.
How big can Walleyes get?
Walleye are not known for their fight when smaller than about 24″ in size; however, they fight well when over that size. Their wide appeal is partially the challenge in catching them, and also their growing popularity as a food fish. Walleyes grow to about 80 cm (31 in) in length, and weigh up to about 9 kg (20 lb). The maximum recorded size is 107 cm (42 in) in length and 13 kilograms (29 lb) in weight. The rate depends on where in their range they occur, as southern populations often growing faster and larger. In general, females grow larger than males. Also, they may live for decades; the maximum recorded age is 29 years.
